Gravel stabiliser grids

Gravel Grids are the ideal ground reinforcement system for creating stable, low-maintenance, and eco-friendly surfaces. Whether you need a gravel grid for driveway or a gravel grid for sloped driveway, our solutions offer excellent durability and load-bearing performance, making them perfect for residential, commercial, and landscaping use.

Made from high-strength plastic, our plastic gravel grid system locks gravel in place, preventing erosion, sinking, or shifting. Also known as gravel stabiliser grids or gravel cell systems, these grids are designed to provide superior support on flat or inclined surfaces.

Gravel Grid is an affordable solution for stabilizing gravel on residential driveways and garden landscaping areas, helping maintain a clean and tidy look around your property.

With an innovative structure, it’s simple to install, environmentally friendly, and built to last. The product comes as sheets of interlinked hexagonal cells supported by a permeable geotextile layer. This smart design not only stops gravel from shifting or forming ruts and puddles, but also supports heavy loads due to its sturdy honeycomb shape made from recyclable HDPE. The geotextile base enhances drainage while also acting as a weed barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gravel grids worth it?

Gravel grids provide substantial advantages in terms of stability, durability, and aesthetics, making them frequently worth the investment for patios, driveways, and pathways. By keeping gravel from moving, they produce a surface that is more level and stable. However, especially for larger areas, the cost and installation effort should be taken into account.

Why Choose Our Gravel Cell System?

Our Gravel Cell System offers a smarter, stronger, and more sustainable solution for ground reinforcement in driveways, garden paths, sloped surfaces, and landscaping projects. Here’s why it’s the preferred choice:

  • Exceptional Strength & Durability
Made from high-quality, recyclable HDPE, our gravel cells form a rigid honeycomb structure that effectively distributes heavy loads, preventing sinking, ruts, or shifting over time.

  • Superior Gravel Stabilisation
The interlocking hexagonal design locks gravel in place, maintaining a neat, level surface while minimizing gravel migration—even on sloped driveways.

  • Eco-Friendly & Water Permeable
Built with a porous geotextile backing, our system allows for natural water drainage, reducing runoff and encouraging groundwater recharge. It also helps prevent weed growth underneath.

  • Easy to Install
Supplied in pre-connected sheets, our Gravel Cell System is lightweight and quick to lay—saving time and labor costs for both residential and commercial projects.

  • Versatile Applications
Whether you’re upgrading a private driveway, reinforcing a slope, or building a garden path, this system adapts to different terrains and load requirements with ease.

Can you lay gravel grids on soil?

Yes, you can lay gravel grids directly on soil, but proper ground preparation is essential to ensure stability, longevity, and effective performance. Here’s how it works:

1. Clear and Level the Area

Remove vegetation, large stones, and debris. Flatten the area as evenly as possible.

2. Compact the Soil

Use a compactor or tamper to create a firm base. This prevents the grid from sinking over time.

3. Optional: Add a Weed Membrane

A geotextile layer can help stop weeds from growing through the gravel without blocking water drainage.

4. Add a Sub-Base (Highly Recommended)

While not strictly necessary for light-duty use, adding a 50–100 mm layer of compacted crushed stone (MOT Type 1 or similar) will greatly enhance durability and prevent movement.

5. Lay the Gravel Grids

Connect and position the grids over the prepared base, then fill them with gravel (ideally 10–20 mm angular gravel).

Do gravel grids need a sub-base?

Yes, in most cases, gravel grids need a sub-base for best performance.

A sub-base is a compacted layer of material that provides a stable foundation for the gravel grid system. It serves several important functions:

🔹Load Support

Distributes weight evenly, preventing the grid and gravel from sinking under vehicle or foot traffic.

🔹Prevents Movement & Ruts

A solid base stops the grid from shifting over time, especially on sloped driveways or high-traffic areas.

🔹Improves Drainage

A well-laid sub-base allows water to drain away efficiently, reducing puddles and erosion.

When a Sub-Base Is Needed:

  • Driveways
  • Parking areas
  • Sloped surfaces
  • High-traffic footpaths

When a Sub-Base Might Not Be Needed:

  • Light-use garden paths
  • Decorative areas with no load
  • Temporary installations

Even in these lighter-use cases, a thin sub-base layer still improves results and extends longevity.

How do you use a Gravel Grid?

Using a gravel grid is a straightforward process, but proper installation ensures long-term stability and performance. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Plan & Mark the Area

  • Measure the surface area where you want to install the gravel grid (e.g., driveway, path, slope).

  • Mark the edges with spray paint or string lines.

2. Prepare the Ground

  • Remove vegetation, topsoil, and debris.

  • Level and compact the soil using a plate compactor or hand tamper.

3. Install a Geotextile Membrane (Optional but Recommended)

  • Lay a weed control fabric over the prepared surface to prevent weed growth and improve drainage.

4. Lay the Sub-Base (Highly Recommended)

  • Spread 50–100 mm of crushed stone or MOT Type 1 over the area.

  • Compact it thoroughly to form a solid, level base.

5. Lay the Gravel Grids

  • Start at one corner and lay the grids by connecting the interlocking sides.

  • Cut edges to fit curves or tight areas using a handsaw or angle grinder.

6. Fill the Grids with Gravel

  • Use angular gravel (10–20 mm) for best lock-in effect.

  • Fill each cell so the gravel is level with or just above the top of the grid.

7. Rake and Compact Again

  • Lightly rake the surface to spread gravel evenly.

  • Compact once more to settle the gravel into the cells.
