The geotube filtration is quite unique which makes it a perfect unit for protecting your land. It is a large bag (usually in the form of a tube or elongated bag) that is made from porous woven geotextile. This product is a stronger version of sandbags, more durable, and ideal for use in construction.
Usually, geotubes are commonly used in various civil projects, especially for erosion control. Building geotubes on the shoreline is one way to protect the coastline so that it does not retreat further due to rising sea levels.
You may apply it to create sea walls, usually needed to drain temporary construction areas. That is why; the geotube filtration and the whole materials must be strong. It has to be permeable and can hold all sand inside, but it is not trapped by the water.
Geotube for Dewatering
Geotube production usually starts by making geotextile tubes as needed. Then, it is filled with a mixture of sand slurry, and water. Filling usually uses a hydraulic system to ensure that the sand can fill each area of the bag until it is solid.
After that, the water inside will come out through the pores, leaving the sand to settle and solidify. This sand then functions as a barrier for water from outside areas and around.
Geotube filtration is a dewatering method that can be used for various needs or applications. With the right drying method (dewatering), sand can be compacted in one location.
The volume can also be reduced by increasing the solids concentration. So, the amount of water in the bag can be drained until it is almost completely dry.
The Geotube Filtration and Installation
The overall application and filtration of this geotextile tube are divided into four different steps. Those are the placing, filling, dewatering, and consolidation process.
1. Placing
Geotube bags or fabric are brought to the construction area first. After that, the bag is positioned lengthwise according to needs. It can also be adjusted to the contour of the construction area. That is why; it is important to measure the area first.
2. Filling
In the filling stage, the sand slurry material is pumped into the geotube container. Pumping is carried out using a machine several times to ensure solid filling.
Furthermore, if deemed necessary, environmentally friendly polymer material is added to the sand or mud slurry. The aim is to help the sand compaction process and water separation.
3. Dewatering
Next, the water is pushed out of the sand tube. At this stage of geotube filtration, hydraulic engineering may be required. Water will flow out of the container through the pores of the geotextile.
The volume of the tube may also decrease as water is released. This filling and dewatering process can be done repeatedly to ensure that the geotube bag is filled solidly and completely.
In fact, usually, the dewatering process is allowed to take quite a long time if there is no target processing time. However, the result will be maximum due to that long time.
After the last filling cycle, the sand material inside will become denser due to the drying process. As a result, the volume of this tube can decrease when it is full of sand/filling material.
Then, the water has been completely drained out. At this stage, the geotube filtration is done and ready to use.
